10 Things I'd bring on a boat to the pacific islands

Kia ora today in Whenua and Takutai we have been practicing for the Summer Learning Journey by doing the 1st task during school time. Takutai came into our class this morning to learn more about their blogs so we helped them sign up for the S.L.J. The first task was to watch a video and learn about how people out in the pacific ocean learn to tell the time by looking at the stars and finding islands by looking at the clouds. Then we had to come up with 10 things we would bring on a boat to the pacific island. My buddy was Penelope so Penelope and I came up with things together, though I must say we basically just came up with a couple of things under categories like how we did our fruit and vegetables. Halfway through doing this task Miss Farr stopped the class and talked to us about how we need healthy food and what we need to stay alive such as water and stuff.

Muesli Reflection

Last Friday we made muesli, We have been planning to make this muesli since week 1 and we finally got to make it in week 5. For the first 3-4 weeks of the term we were looking into healthy and nutritional foods for on the go and for snacks, In week 4 on Friday we started making cereal boxes made out of paper for our muesli to go in. We started by researching different muesli brands and finding out what we want to call our mueslis, I ended up calling mine crunch 'n' munch because it was crunchy.

On Friday we made the muesli our teacher wasn't at school because she was away at a wedding so we had another teacher, I teamed up with Milla to make really good muesli if I'm being honest it was so good and the texture wasn't too bad either.

One thing Milla and I would change is adding more cinnamon and planning more about what we are gonna do instead of just grabbing and putting in whatever we can find. Overall making muesli was really fun and hopefully, we can do other things like that but we only have 3 weeks left of term and next Friday is the last day for tech so we probably won't be able to do anything else exciting because next year i'll be a year 7 and i'll be going to tech.

Muesli week 5

Today we made muesli that we have been planning to do for the last 3 fridays while the year 7’s were at tech. Me and Milla worked in a pair and made a big batch of muesli with oats, crushed up wheat bix, dried cranberries, chocolate chips, marshmallows and dried mangos.

The week before we made the muesli we planned what we had to bring in to class and what we wanted to make the muesli with.

Everyone bought things in to make the muesli but when we got to making it everyone just put anything they could find and wanted it was really fun and everyone enjoyed it I hope we get to do things like that again.

Diya

Kia ora this term we have been making diyas. A diya is made from clay ghee or oil, After you shape it let it dry and then paint it. The first diya I made cracked and broke while I was painting it, I then had to get more clay to make a new one. The paint dryed quite fast on our diyas which was good because then we can add more layers and designs. The clay takes a long time to dry maybe 1-2 days you can tell it is dry when it turns white. Making these diyas were fun apart from watching people paint theres while you are waiting for yours to dry.

Diwali - Fly me up summary

Kia ora, today I did my fly me up summary. On our class site, one of our tasks was to read an article called fly me up and then fill out a summary. The article was about a lady called Tiffany that travelled the world to all the places that celebrate diwali and to learn how different people celebrate it. In my summary I put how many people dont wish to be rich, have alot of friends and be popular like many people would, they wish to have a family that sticks together and be warm and to have good spirits around them.

A part of Diwali is the rangoli pattern, which is a pattern made of brightly coloured sand put into a pattern on the ground. Rangoli patterns are designed as a gesture to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. The patterns of rangoli are lotus and flowers.

Scary sally liked to ride bikes,

Scary sally only rode trykes,

One day a girl came up to her on a scooter,

Scary Sally decided to boot her..

In 2019 it all began...

Covid commenced because of a bat,

It may be the worst yet,

Next it may be a cat.

Terry the berry

Was very blue

He loved to eat apples

Even though he was blue he really loved to eat stew.

A Quatrain is a four line poem alternating in rhyme to one of four patterns (ABAB, AABA, AABB, ABCB) You can join Quantrains together of the same or differing patterns to meet your needs as a single poem also. Kia ora here is somemore poems..

Capillary Effect

Kia ora, today while the year 7's were at tech us year 6's did science.
Last week on friday we made catapults for science and this week we did capillary effects.
First we got 6 cups and 3 different colours, the colours we started with were the primary colours (red, blue and yellow)
Then we filled 3 cups up with water then put the colours in.
We then folded some paper towels and put them in, we then watched the coloured water (molecules) climb up the paper towels and drip into the empty cups to create the secondary colours (Green, pruple and orange)

That means the first 2 sentences (A A) should rhyme and then the next 2 sentences (B B) should rhyme.

Spring rolls

Today while the year 7's were at tech, the year 6's and I made fresh spring rolls, for the last 2 weeks on Friday mornings we have been learning about nutrition and the 6 things we need to keep us going, Vitamins,  Minerals, Carbs, Fats + Oils, Protein and most of all WATER!!

We made fresh spring rolls because they are healthier than deep-fried, deep-fried spring rolls are cooked in oil which makes them greasy.

The Olyimpics

Every four years, athletes from around the world gather to compete in events such as sprinting, long jump, gymnastics, BMX riding, swimming, and more as part of the Olympics. The first Olympic game was in 1896 held in Athens, Greece. The first-ever prize to be presented was an olive leaf crown/wreath, James Connelly won the triple jump which was known as the “hop, skip, jump”.

The ancient Greeks loved competitions of all sorts, each year they would hold big festivals of games and competitions which held honor towards the gods.

There are 2 different types of Olympics, the winter Olympics, and the summer Olympics. Since the Olympics started there have been 28 summer Olympics in 23 cities and 23 winter Olympics in 20 cities.

The 2020 Olympics were postponed to 2021 due to covid-19, they were held this year in 2021.

The approximate cost of the Tokyo Olympics 2021 was $12.6 billion dollars, however, due to the pandemic the cost has gone up to $15.4 billion dollars.

During the 1936 Berlin Olympics, two Japanese pole-vaulters tied in second place.  Instead of competing in the event again, they cut the silver and bronze medals in halves and fused them together. This was done so that each of them had a half silver and half bronze medal.

172 or more of the same people have appeared at the Olympics more than twice to compete in the Olympics, it is quite common for people to get hurt in the Olympics depending on what event they are competing in. In the 2020 Olympics due to covid-19 on day 6 people have already had to leave because they don’t want to be stuck in japan not being able to go home, the Olympics usually go on for 2-4 weeks.

Octopus Report

                                                         Octopus report

Octopodes are amazing human-like creatures, they are very intelligent and inquisitive and also famous for having 8 arms also known as tentacles. They are very soft and have no bones which makes it easy for them to squeeze through tight spaces, when they are captured by humans they can free themselves by squeezing through gaps. Here's a fun fact, the smallest gap an octopus can fit through is the size of a coin!

What do octopuses eat?

Octopi eat small crustaceans such as clams, small fish, shrimps, lobsters and sometimes they even eat other octopi.
After the female octopus gives birth sometimes the mother and father octopi die to protect their baby and prevent them from eating the baby octopi, Octopus is serious cannibals they tend to eat their babies and sometimes other octopi.
Octopus have prey but also preditors, the preditors of an octopus are moray eels, seals and sperm whales they are the top 3 sea creatures octopi want to stay away from.

Where do octopi live?

Most octopi live in coastal marine waters around the united states also in any coastal marine waters around the world depending on the temperature of the water and the coziest place they can build and find dens.
Octopi like their water to be 59 to 61 degrees.`
Even though they like warm water they can also be found in cold waters anywhere around the oceans.

The life cycle of an octopus

The life cycle of an octopus has 4 stages - The egg, larva, jevenile the last part is the adult.
The egg and larva lasts for about 56 months at the most, the mother carrys the eggs for the 53-56 months and then births them.
It takes octopi 1-2 years to grow fully from a juvenile to an adult.

The 10 Great Walks In New Zealand

Today we did a brochure about the 10 Great Walks of New Zealand, Some of our class are away playing soccer and the class next to us, Taiao also has people away playing soccer so the kids that didn't go came to our class and we started doing a brochure.
I think my brochure is simple and easy to read and understand and it has most of the information you need to know about the walks.
Here is my 10 Great Walks of New Zealand Brochure.

Humpback Whales

Today our teacher gave us a task to learn about humpback whales, the year 6's in Whenua were in Naghere because the year 7's were at Polly Tech with William Pike.
Everyone in Naghere including the year 6's from Whenua made either a google doc or google drawing, I chose to do google drawing because I find it easier than docs.
Here is my blog post about humpback whales.

Solar panels for Paroa School

Today Milla and I created a small map of Paroa school (Our school), then we added leaves which we used as solar panels. We added solar panels to most buildings in the school. We have been looking at energy for about 4 weeks now but we are doing energy for 10 weeks. For the past 1 week, we have been focusing on solar energy and we had to create what our school would look like with solar panels and why we need them. Milla and I learnt that solar panels are really expensive, they cost around 3,000 to 30,000 dollars. We enjoyed making the model, we started off by making it 3D  but then we realised we only had one day left so we made is 2D instead.

5 Health Benefits of Exercise

Today we did a challenge with Taiao, Most Wednesdays we go for a run to 4j's and back.
4j's is a dairy not far from our school, most kids jog at the start and the rest of the way where some kids walk and jog some of the way.
The challenge was, We had to create a poster showing the 5 Health benefits of fitness. Miss Read and Miss Far had to decide on 2 people with quality captions and quality information, the 2 winners were Grace and Eden they won a little blue and 500-700 house points.
Even though we had a time limit of no more than 25 minutes I enjoyed this task because it was easy for me to edit the background and text fonts because usually it takes me a long time.

Inflatable World - Persuasive Writting

 Dear Tania Gibson,

My name is Ella and I think it would be a fantastic idea to get an Inflatable World in town.  An Inflatable World would get us more money, it would give everyone something to do and bring enjoyment to all ages and it would also teach people new skills.

I think building an Inflatable World would be a good idea because it could make a lot of money. On the weekends when kids are bored, they could spend time with their friends at Inflatable World. It would also be good for birthdays and fundraisers.

If we had an Inflatable World lots of people would be able to enjoy and spend time with their friends and family. Any age would be suitable as long as there are safe areas for children and toddlers.

An Inflatable World would also be good for teaching useful skills such as Jumping higher, dodging, etc. Schools and classes could go for a day out at Inflatable World and have fun, learn new skills, and do challenges.

To conclude my letter, I think an Inflatable World in town would be a good idea because it would make a lot of money, teach people new skills and bring enjoyment to all ages. I hope that you consider my letter and put it into mind.

Yours sincerely, Ella

For the past 2 weeks during writing, We have been focusing on persuading our readers. First, we had to choose a topic that we wanted, I chose to write to the mayor Tania Gibson about building an Inflatable world in Greymouth. We weren't really writing the letter and sending it to them, this task was just for learning purposes. I enjoyed this task because it didn't take me long, it took me about 3-4 days.

The Tree of Life

She held hope in her outstretched hands.
Kneeling gently on the ground, She prepared herself for what she knew she must do.
The cool water trickled through her muddy fingers, And the soft, black earth felt comfortingly warm on her palms.

Planting the tree of life would mean a new beginning, the opportunities were endless...

Feeling the excitement course through her quivering body, she lowered the tree of life into the small hole she had prepared.

It was time...

1 month had passed, the tree was 7 times its size, probably even bigger!
It had 3x the leaves, they were a nice warm green.
She checked on the tree every day, it was almost as if the tree of life was her best friend.
The tree was very delicate, the lushes green leaves sometimes light up when it can feel the energy around it.
Quite often she rushes her warm fingers through the waterfall behind the tree, the waterfall contains a special tree growing potion, it also helps the leaves grow a special power and stay healthy.

The only person who knows about the tree and its powers is Lily, Lily is a 14-year-old girl that lives with her family in florida.
Lily has kept the tree a secret for a while now.
The tree has a power that, when the wind blows some of the leaves blow with it.
Some of the power drains out of the leaf and spreads across its path,  you can't see the glowing leaves unless you have the ability.
As far as Lily knows, she is the only one with the ability.
She sometimes thinks about what would happen if she told anyone, Maybe they would tell other people, Maybe they would keep it a secret.
She wouldn't know, so she has promised herself to keep it a secret unless she needs to tell anyone. Lily thinks the tree may not grow any larger, she often says to herself "we'll find out soon".

Holidays

It was a hot summer day when we woke up at 7 in the morning to meet my aunty in Murchison. When we met her I stayed at her house for a night then she took me to Richmond.
To meet my nana, we said goodbye to my auntie then we went to the Richmond Mall.
At the Mall, we went into some shops and
I got some shoes and clothes. Then at 2:00, we went to Motuweka which is where my nana lives.
I said hello to Kelly which is my auntie then I went downstairs to put my stuff away.
We went to cafes a lot and went out for dinner a few times.
I stayed at my nana's for 3 to 4 weeks then I went to my great nanas for 1 week. In that week we went to the river a lot, Mostly in the afternoons when it was hot.
Sometimes we did baking and when it was raining, we were inside most of the day.
On Friday of the last week of the holidays, we came back home to Greymouth and spent the weekend at home.
Then school started.

Kawa of Care DLO

Today we learnt about the Kawa of Care and that we signed an agreement to look after our Chromebook and we had to pick a number out of a hat and the number we picked out of the hat is the number of the sentence we had to write about, The number I got was 4 and the sentence was "I will always be in the right place at the right time when I am online". I enjoyed writing this because at the start I didn't know what to write but in the end I finished the task.
